Proficiencies in Fundamental English and Mathematics

ITT providers must, as an accreditation requirement, assure that trainees have these skills either during the selection process, or later during the training programme.

Any work to address shortfalls in English and mathematics must be undertaken by the trainee teacher in addition to other aspects of their training. It is the trainee’s responsibility to secure these fundamental skills, whereas responsibility for assurance lies with the ITT provider.

During the interview process, you will be asked to sit a short ‘quiz’ to assess your proficiencies in Maths. Areas assessed will be from the Primary National Curriculum, namely:

  • Interpreting data
  • Operations (including formal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Solving multistep word problems
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Estimating and rounding

You will also be given a written scenario-based task. Here we look for appropriacy of response, but pay close attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Any points for consideration are given as part of the interview feedback and feed into subject knowledge targets throughout the training year
